WKRN-TV Nashville

wkrn_news

WKRN-TV worked with M-BITS -Media/Broadcast Integration and Technical Services, a LYNX Technik systems integrator partner located in Nashville, Tennessee. WKRN-TV, Channel 2 in Nashville, Tennessee opted for the LYNX Technik yellobrik fiber transmission and multiplexing solutions for multi-venue fiber conversion.

To take advantage of its fiber-optic cable infrastructure and network, WKRN-TV required a multi-feed conversion, encoding, and multiplexing solution to accommodate multi-cast SDI signals being transmitted from multiple venues to its broadcast facility. The challenge was to meet existing requirements as well future-proof its facility for evolving digital broadcast needs.

The current project at hand was the expansion of the CWDM fiber installation at Bridgestone Arena, an all-purpose venue in downtown Nashville, Tennessee, that was completed in 1996. The technical and engineering team was tasked with transmitting camera feeds from the Bridgestone Arena back to the WKRN television and news station for broadcast.

“We chose the yellobrik modules due in part to their reliability. LYNX Technik solutions came highly reviewed based on my research as well as recommendations from our system integrator, M-BITS. In addition, a key feature for us was the ability to change the fiber interface connections on our yellobrik’s, depending on our specific requirements at the time.”

David K. Parker, Chief Engineer at WKRN-TV

WKRN opted for the LYNX Technik yellobrik ORX 1802 and OTX 1812 receiver and transmitter modules to send and receive fiber optic SDI signals. Yellobrik transmitters were installed at the Arena, and receivers were installed at the WKRN broadcast facility for an error-free and long-haul fiber transmission solution for SDI camera feeds.

This transmission system interfaces seamlessly with a Miranda HD Router and Ross Video Production switcher.

In addition, WKRN installed yellobrik CWDM 9-channel multiplexers/de-multiplexers at both locations. The OCM 1891 multiplexer/de-multiplexer units have provided WKRN with the ability to send and receive up to nine individual signals over a single fiber link. This has allowed WKRN to increase the amount of data it can send over its network within a certain amount of time and bandwidth, providing extensive coverage of a multitude of events planned at the Arena.

WKRN continues to expand this project to accommodate the simultaneous transmission of additional feeds from other locations. In addition, WKRN’s future plans include expansion and enhancements in its news gathering capabilities, and plans to upgrade its interface equipment for all of its ENG vehicles.
